The school lacked a dedicated web presence capable of supporting both its outward-facing marketing needs and its internal operational requirements. There was no centralized platform for prospective families to access admissions information, no system for staff to manage internal resources, and no portal for students to interact with school content. The goal was to build all of this from scratch — in one cohesive platform.
Role & Scope
Taken on as the sole developer responsible for the complete build — from platform selection and information architecture through design, development, and deployment. The scope covered the public-facing marketing site, a content management structure for school staff, and a secure access system for both staff and students. All technical decisions, from theme architecture to authentication strategy, were owned end to end.
Approach
WordPress was selected for its flexibility as a full content management platform. The site was built on a custom Divi child theme written in PHP — giving full control over layout, structure, and functionality beyond what Divi's visual builder exposes natively. This approach allowed for a tailored content architecture that a purely drag-and-drop solution couldn't support at the same level. Content was structured using custom post types for events, admissions, and resources — keeping the backend organized and making it straightforward for non-technical staff to add and manage content in their respective areas. For authentication, Descope was integrated to handle Google Workspace SSO, enabling staff and students to log in with their existing school accounts without requiring a separate credential system. Role-based access control was configured to ensure each user group — staff and students — only sees what's relevant to them.
Outcome
The delivered site covers the school's full public-facing presence — including admissions and enrollment information, an events calendar, a news section, and contact forms tailored for prospective families. Content is structured through custom post types, making it straightforward for staff to keep information current without touching any code. Beyond the marketing layer, the site includes a role-separated access system: staff have a dedicated portal with access to private resources, internal forms, and FAQs, while students log into a separate dashboard with content relevant to their needs. Both groups authenticate through their existing Google Workspace accounts via Descope SSO — no separate login credentials required. The result is a single platform that serves three distinct audiences — prospective families, staff, and students — each with a tailored experience, all managed from one WordPress backend.
